James Mill's Common Place Books

In 2010 we launched the electronic edition of James Mill's common place books, in collaboration with the London Library.

The edition comprises transcriptions and editorial apparatus for the four large manuscript notebooks bequeathed to the Library by John Stuart Mill. They contain notes, references and drafts pertaining to Mill's political and religious thought, including the working material for his 1820 essay Government.

The edition is open-access, fully searchable, and available to all. It can be accessed here.
