Biography: In his own words, Yanis Varoufakis was ‘thrust onto the public scene by Europe’s inane handling of an inevitable crisis’. In January 2015, he was elected to the Hellenic Parliament as Finance Minister for Greece. He dealt with the Eurogroup, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, but found these institutions authoritarian and inefficient. He resigned in July 2015, after refusing to sign a loan agreement that perpetuated Greece’s debt-deflationary cycle. Yanis continues to speak and write on political and economic topics. His best-selling books include Talking to my Daughter about the Economy: A Brief History of Capitalism (2017), Adults in the Room: My Battle With Europe’s Deep Establishment (2017), And the Weak Suffer What They Must? Europe, Austerity and the Threat to Global Stability (2016), and The Global Minotaur: America, Europe and the Future of the World Economy (2011, 2015). His older books include Game Theory: A Critical Text (2014), Foundations of Economics: A Beginner's Companion (1998), and Rational Conflict (1991).
In 2016, Varoufakis co-founded DiEM25 – the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025. It now has almost 40,000 members in 56 countries. The ‘radical, utopian’ project has campaigned on issues such as migration and transparency. https://diem25.org
Yanis read mathematics and economics at the Universities of Essex and Birmingham. He has taught economics at the Universities of East Anglia, Cambridge, Glasgow and Texas. He holds a Chair in Political Economy and Economic Theory at the University of Athens, and is Honorary Professor of Political Economy at the University of Sydney, Honoris Causa Professor of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Torino, and Visiting Professor of Political Economy at King’s College London.
In summer 2017, Yanis Varoufakis received an honorary degree from the University of Sussex: http://www.sussex.ac.uk/graduation/honorary/honorary-graduates-2017/yanis-varoufakis
