I am looking forward very much to welcoming you to the School of Business, Management and Economics. The current crisis in the banking and financial sector has highlighted the need for competent and responsible men and women to provide strong leadership, not only in these areas but across the whole range of business, financial and regulatory activity.
With its strong emphasis on policy and policy-directed research, Sussex is exceptionally well placed to provide leadership in the development and dissemination of sustainable business and management practice, informed by sound economic logic.
We want our students to go out with a 'Sussex edge', equipped with knowledge and skills that differentiate them from other graduates. The integration of the former Department of Economics and SPRU - Science and Technology Policy Research to form the new School of Business, Management and Economics provides a good foundation for this.
I feel strongly that Sussex, with its particular ethos, has much to offer that other Universities do not. You will be joining a highly differentiated, research-led school with a strong national and international following. I hope you will enjoy being a part of it.
