School of Business, Management and Economics

Welcome to the Department of Economics

The Department of Economics at Sussex is committed to high quality teaching and research within a friendly academic environment. We have about 310 undergraduates on a variety of degree programmes, plus thriving masters programmes and research degree programmes. About 40% of our undergraduate and over 70% of our postgraduate students are from overseas and enrich the learning environment in the Department.

Our students have a good record of obtaining high quality jobs on graduation. One of the best places to learn economics, the Department of Economics at Sussex was ranked equal 3rd of 50 Departments in Britain on overall satisfaction in the 2008 National Student Survey.

We specialise in research on the economics of developing countries, issues of international trade and labour economics. Our research is supported by substantial research grants from the ESRC and other sources. We also work closely with all the major international agencies, from the World Bank to the European Commission, and this depth of experience is brought to the teaching of our degree programmes. More details can be found by consulting the research or people pages of this site. We hope that you find this website useful in providing information about the department's activities.
