Most of our graduates have gone on to art-related careers in museums, galleries and photographic collections:
- Serpentine Gallery in London
- Royal Academy of Arts
- British Museum
- The Regency Town House
- Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Other graduates have gone on to careers in non-art related fields, transferring the skills they have acquired during their degree:
- primary school teaching
- research assistants for charities.
We are also delighted that so many of our graduates choose further study as their next step, often staying on at Sussex to study for a Masters degree (about one in four students on our postgraduate art history courses are recent Sussex graduates).
Cassie's career perspective
‘Sussex was the right choice for me because of the breadth of the Art History degree and the friendly and close-knit community of staff and students. I always felt supported both by my tutors and the good friends I made.
‘The main skills I’ve taken with me from my degree are the ability to do independent and detailed research to a deadline and the confidence to present my ideas to colleagues and the general public.
‘I’m currently an Assistant Curator in the Furniture, Textiles and Fashion Department at the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum), working on the next Fashion in Motion catwalk show. I’m on the five-year Assistant Curator Development Programme (something I think everyone interested in this field should know about), which provides on-the-job training. Prior to this, I did voluntary work at several museums and art galleries, worked as a press officer at a contemporary art gallery, and taught at a National Trust property.
‘Looking further ahead, I would love to work in a museum or gallery in New York.’
