In autumn 2012, a group of third year Sussex Art History students were trained by artist and educator Anthony Luvera, along with gallery staff, curators and University faculty, to run a series of gallery-based workshops in response to the 2012 Brighton Photo Biennial. The Sussex third years took groups of local sixth form students to different exhibitions, which they used to initiate conversation and critical debate.
The sessions dealt with a range of issues, including the different ways in which photography is used in contemporary culture, the impact of digitization, the roles played by museums and galleries, relationships between the meaning of images and contexts in which they are viewed, and ways to interpret or ‘read’ different photographs.
The workshops were designed to raise the profile of Art History among sixth-form students considering the routes available to them after college, and to provide Sussex students with a valuable experience working in gallery education.
