American Studies offers you the opportunity to study American culture, literature and history from a variety of perspectives. From the very beginning of your degree, you will learn the foundations of these disciplines and how to work with them in an interdisciplinary way. So, you might combine the study of the novel in the 20th century with a module on African American history and culture; study both the history of slavery and the American Civil War; or combine analysis of modern American culture with a module that examines America’s role in the wider world. This pattern, combining depth and diversity of intellectual interests, recognises that areas of knowledge are interdependent and mutually illuminating. In our modules, you learn to critically dissect literary and historical texts, images, music and film, all the while sharpening your ability to communicate orally and in writing with your peers and tutors.
