Isabella Hammad discusses her debut novel, The Parisian, widely acclaimed in the international press as "an exquisite novel" (The New York Times) and "one of the most ambitious first novels to have appeared in years" (The Guardian). The book tells the story of Midhat Kamal, a young man from Palestine, who spends the First World War in France before returning to his native city of Nablus during the turbulent years of the British Mandate in Palestine. Isabella will be joined by Sussex academics Jacob Norris (History) and John Masterson (English) to discuss the book’s key themes and the questions it raises about the boundaries between history and fiction. The event is free and discussion will be followed by an open Q&A with the audience.

The event is co-sponsored by the Middle East and North Africa Centre at Sussex (MENACS) and the Centre for Rights and Anti-Colonial Justice, as well as the Departments of History and English.
