Mexican Mahjar: Transnational Maronites, Jews and Arabs Under the French Mandate
Camila Pastor will discuss her award-winning book, The Mexican Mahjar – the first global history of Middle Eastern migrations to Mexico. Through her use of French colonial archives and historical ethnography among Arab and Jewish communities in Mexico, Pastor’s work explores the intersection between French colonial control over mandate Syria and Lebanon, and the unfolding of migrants’ lives across transnational spaces. Tracing issues of class, race, and gender through the decades of increased immigration to Mexico, the talk will provide fresh perspective on the creation of global migratory networks in the early 20th century and beyond.
This is a mixed in-person and online event, hosted by the History Department at the University of Sussex in collaboration with the Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies (North Carolina State University) and the Middle East and North Africa Centre at Sussex (MENACS). A live Q&A will follow the talk.
