Postgraduate research degrees (2014 entry)

Research training and Doctoral School

Our MSc in Social Research Methods, run by the new Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Centre, is specifically designed to provide 1+3 training for those intending to move directly to doctoral study in relevant disciplines and interdisciplinary areas. It can also be taken as a stand-alone one-year course.

Our Doctoral School is a distinctive development at Sussex, operating alongside our schools of studies. The Doctoral School recognises that the more than 1,200 postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers at Sussex are a fundamental part of the University's intellectual vitality and seeks to enable you to feel fully integrated as a member of the wider research community of the University.

Our Doctoral School hosts the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) through which the ESRC delivers support for postgraduate training. The Centre receives around £3.5 million in funding from the ESRC. With matched funding from the University, this provides up to 110 doctoral studentships over five years from October 2011. For more information, refer to 2014 Funding for postgraduate study.
