Sussex Sustainability Research Programme

Research

SSRP supports the sustainability of life on Earth through rigorous interdisciplinary research which stimulates action and influences policy.

Building on existing strengths at the University of Sussex and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) across the social and natural sciences, we are framing our research around actions necessary to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our funded research in particular addresses interactions among the goals, and how trade-offs can be minimised or synergies maximised.

All of our projects were funded through an internal competitive process, the SSRP Fund, and were assessed on their ability to:

  • Address sustainability as framed by the SDGs
  • Address linkages, in particular trade-offs and synergies among two or more SDGs
  • Bring together a distinctive combination of disciplines from across the natural and social sciences, including investigators from at least one of the SSRP core schools (BMEC, Global Studies, Law Politics and Sociology, Life Sciences) and IDS.
  • Lead to further external funding applications
  • Provide particular leverage in supporting national and international policies to achieve the SDGs
