I am currently Professor of Sustainability Transitions, SPRU – Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex (2015-present). I was previously a Reader in Sustainability and Innovation and RCUK Academic Fellow, Sustainability Research Institute (SRI), School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds (2007-2015), a Research Associate, Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research, University of Cambridge (2005-2007) and a Research Associate/Lecturer, Centre for Environmental Policy and Centre for Energy Policy and Technology, Imperial College London (1996-2005).


I am Professor of Sustainability Transitions at SPRU (Science Policy Research Unit). My research explores technological and social factors relating to the innovation of new energy technologies, the co-evolution of technologies and institutions for a transition to a sustainable low carbon economy, and relations and interdependencies between energy use and economic growth. My current research focuses on energy demand in the digital societylow carbon industrial strategy, reorienting investments and divesting from fossil fuels, and the relations between energy use and economic growth

I am also the PhD Doctoral Programme Convenor for SPRU.

My previous research has included Realising transition pathways to a UK low carbon electricity system, Transition pathways to a low carbon economy, examining business models for local low carbon infrastructure, research on future energy decision making for cities, and an ESRC research seminar series on Complexity economics for sustainability.

I am a member of the Board of the European Society for Ecological Economics and one of the coordinators of the Environment-Economy Interactions Research Area of the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy.

My new book Energy and Economic Growth: Why we need a new pathway to prosperity was published by Routledge in 2017.
