Research in Sociology at Sussex draws on our long-standing tradition in both social and political theory and rigorous empirical research in the UK , Europe and North America. We have a world class reputation for research on inequality, regulation and identity. The Department offers a vibrant and productive environment in which to conduct and present research. We currently have 28 research students and 5 research fellows working on a range of projects.

The Sociology Department at Sussex is home to researchers working across a variety of cutting edge themes, including citizenship, cosmopolitanism, globalisation, race and racism, multiculturalism, nation and identity, gender relations, sexual violence, inequalities, labour markets and employment, health, the pharamceutical industry, genetic testing, mental illness, pain, shyness and healthcare policy.

Our research is developed within three areas:

In addition to the academic value of our research, our work has fed into a number of public and policy debates: members of the Department have presented to and advised Parliamentary select committees, written briefings for policymakers and have worked on projects commissioned by a number of agencies, such as the fire service.
