Research

I am a social and health psychologist working in the "cognition-behaviour" field of social cognition. My research focuses on modelling the motivational and volitional processes that regulate action. I am interested in: social cognition models, the intention-behaviour gap and goal theories. I am especially interested in the design and evaluation of interventions to change health behaviours.

I have applied social psychological theory to understanding a variety of health-related behaviours including; (1) preventive action (such as exercise, diet, smoking and condom use), (ii) patient help-seeking (in response to asthma-like symptoms), (iii) patient assessment (e.g. pain measurement and the assessment of psychosocial needs amongst terminally ill patients), (iv) patient adherence (e.g., in relation to anti-malaria medication) and staff-client interaction (in the care of persons with learning disabilities).

Teaching

I convene a module on the MSc Health Psychology programme and convene and teach a final-year option in health psychology. I also teach health psychology to first year psychology students and to medical students. In addition, I teach social cognition on a second year social psychology course. I supervise undergraduate, MSc and doctoral research.
