Biography

Elena joined the University of Sussex in 2012 as a Doctoral Researcher on an ESRC-funded 1+3 Studentship programme. She was awarded her BA and MPA at the University of York in 2009 and 2012 respectively.

Elena is currently in the second year of her +3 PhD course. Her current interests address non-implementation issues in transitional countries, with a focus on environmental regulation of the oil industry in Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.

Elena's broader interests include the post-Soviet energy sector, behaviour of the environmental regulation stakeholders, economic diversification within the post-Soviet states, these states' approaches to solving environmental problems, and the impact of foreign actors on the post-Soviet bloc's environmental policy and practice.

Since the commencement of her study, Elena has co-organised the inaugural International Graduate Conference on Corruption and Anti-Corruption at the University of Sussex, and given lectures and seminars on a variety of environment-related topics, ranging from Globalisation and International Environmental Law to Green Politics and Ecologism. During her fieldwork Elena had lectured at the Kazan National Research Technological University, Naryan-Mar Socio-Humanitarian College, and the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration where she spent two months as a visiting scholar. In 2015 Elena has presented her work at the annual BASEES and BISA PGN conferences.
