I received my BA in Modern History at the University of Oxford in 1997, after which I completed an MA in Political Philosophy at the University of York. I returned to Oxford in 1998 for my doctoral research, receiving a D.Phil. in Politics in 2002. During 2002-3, I was a Reseach Fellow at the Department of Social Policy and Social Work in Oxford, then in 2003-4 I was an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Relations, Oxford. I joined Sussex in 2004 and I am currently a Senior Lecturer in Politics.


I'm Reader in Politics and Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange for the School of Law, Politics, and Sociology. I'm also Deputy Editor of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Community and Business

I'm involved in a number of community and public sector activities, including advice and consultancy, training, and media work. Recent activities in these areas include:

2015-16, Design and delivery of training sessions on migration management for senior government officials, International Centre for Parliamentary Studies

2012-13, Special Adviser to the UK House of Lords EU Select Committee inquiry into the EU's Global Approach to Migration and Mobility

2010, Director of the FCO Chevening Fellowship on Managing Migration at the University of Sussex

I regularly speak at practitioner events, recent examples include the Anglo-German Forum at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Wilton Park, the Democracy Forum at the UK House of Commons, and the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung, Germany.

I have extensive experience providing comment and interviews for local, national and international media, including newspapers, radio and television.
