School of Law, Politics and Sociology

Law and Society

Lead: Amir Paz-Fuchs

Deputy Lead: Danielle Griffiths

The Law and Society RDT supports colleagues whose research falls into this area in order to assist with REF preparation, as well as providing more general research support including feedback on works in progress (WIP) and discussion of key areas of interest to the group.

Key information:

1. RDT Meetings

The group meets twice a term (dates below). The meetings include discussion of REF related issues, presentation of WIP discussion of areas which the group have requested help with such as funding and writing related issues, and sharing general research related ideas and problems.

If you have suggestions for content of future meetings – things you would find useful to develop your research – please email a.paz-fuchs@sussex.ac.uk or danielle.griffiths@sussex.ac.uk

2. Work in Progress meetings

The group arranges informal WIP sessions at which colleagues can obtain feedback on their WIP. This might be a paper at an early stage that you’d welcome some feedback on; an idea for a piece that you’d like to test out or are struggling to develop; or pieces that you have worked on but are not sure whether, and if so how, to return to and take forward.

You will be able to present in a friendly environment, test ideas, and receive written comments from colleagues, allowing you to advance and improve your work.

If you would like to present any WIP please email (as above) to arrange.

Dates

Law and Society RDT meetings:

Autumn 2019

  1. 23rd October 2019 11am-12pm Freeman F22: Acquaintance with colleagues’ research and plan for the upcoming year.
  2. 4th December 2019 1.30pm-3.30pm (TBC): WIP. Please email if you would like to present.

 3.  WIP reading.

The group reads and offers feedback on draft work that is about to be submitted for publication, particularly in relation to members’ preparation for REF 2020. The work should be submitted to Danielle, following the procedure below, and it will then be allocated amongst 2 group members to review.

PROCEDURE:

1.  There is cover sheet that should be completed prior to submitting work to the RDT. The cover sheet gives readers a prior indication of the originality and significance of the work and also any previous issues and comments that the work has had. Complete this cover sheet.

2. Email completed cover sheet and copy of draft publication to Danielle Griffiths (Danielle.Griffiths@sussex.ac.uk)

3. Taking into account colleagues’ recommendations of readers, the team’s policy that everyone has the opportunity, at some stage, to be involved in reading and commenting on WIP, and the fair distribution of reading amongst colleagues, the lead and deputy will identify two readers to comment on the piece.

4. To avoid unnecessary delay to publication, upon accepting a request to read work-in-progress readers are asked to agree with the author a deadline for the provision of comments. The expectation is that comments will be returned to authors within two weeks of readers emailing authors to inform them that they will be reading their draft work.

5. Readers should write their comments under the ‘comments on WIP’ heading below and, in the first instance, email their completed forms to Danielle. In their comments, readers should provide critical, but constructive, feedback on the draft work, indicating how it may be developed/made stronger. Readers’ comments should also indicate how the work meets the REF criteria of originality, significance, and rigour.

6. If they would find it helpful, authors can ask to discuss with readers their comments on the draft work.

* A copy of the REF 2014 Criteria is available on the Law and Society RDT Study Direct site under ‘Planned REF Outputs’ – ‘Draft Work / Work-in-progress’ (REF 2014 Part 2C Main Panel C criteria, para 68-71) or can be found at: https://tinyurl.com/y5jvjutw
