Organic chemistry matters! The old man of science or an example of healthy ageing?
Organic chemistry is a creative discipline that has underpinned many of the inventions and advances of the modern age. For commodities such as plastics, drugs, dyes, cosmetics, explosives and petrochemicals, and in order to understand and harness the power of biology, biochemistry and medicine, organic chemistry matters. But what is it? Where did it come from? And where is it going? This lecture charts the evolution of this science, some of its past and present accomplishments, and then casts an eye to the future to see what part organic chemistry might play in the current era of human challenges.
