School of Life Sciences

Publications

The facility publication policy is a three-step guideline in accordance with the Royal microscopy society (RMS) guidelines. The type of recognition that is most appropriate will vary dependent upon the contribution provided:

1. All publications resulting from the use of instruments within the facility should, at the very least, acknowledge the facility as a whole, e.g. ‘the authors acknowledge the Electron microscopy imaging centre of the University of Sussex, funded by the School of Life Sciences, the Wellcome Trust (095605/Z/11/A, 208348/Z/17/Z) and the RM Phillips Trust for their support & assistance in this work’

2. Where users have had help from a particular member of staff with TEM training, imaging or staff have generated additional data personally, this staff member should be acknowledged by name, alongside the centre if applicable:

We thank [staff name] for help with [..] and imaging at the Electron microscopy imaging centre of the University of Sussex, funded by the School of Life Sciences, the Wellcome Trust (095605/Z/11/A, 208348/Z/17/Z) and the RM Phillips Trust

Alternative shorter version: The authors thank [staff name] from the Electron microscopy imaging centre at the University of Sussex for their support in this work.

3. If scientists from the electron microscopy facility contributed more than just routine techniques and gave significant support to a particular project, they should be co-authors of papers that use data. Development or adaptation of protocols to suit samples or materials, designing experiments, sample preparation, extensive data analysis and interpretation of images are not routine and constitute contributions meriting co-authorship. Simple acquisitions of raw data or routine sample preparations alone normally would not merit co-authorship but should still be acknowledged.
