Malcolm Ross joined SLS as Professor of European Law in February 2000 and was Head of Department 2003-2007. As well as writing widely on EU legal matters he has acted as a consultant to the European Commission and was  involved in the training of judges and senior lawyers in Poland and Slovenia in EU state aid law as part of the preparatory arrangements in those States for joining the Union. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Common Market Studies.

Role

Professor of European Law; Director of Taught Programmes (School of Law, Politics and Sociology)

Research

European Union Law generally, but with special reference to the interface of market and social objectives. He has written widely on state aid, the regulation of public services and Union citizenship. He is particularly interested in services of general economic interest (SGEIs) and the extent to which they are subject to the competition and free movement rules of the European Union. His current research addresses more theoretical concerns in relation to the emerging significance of solidarity as a paradigm in EU law and he is writing a monograph for OUP in this area (2010).
