International Relations (IR for short) is one of the fastest growing academic subjects, probably because the world is changing so much and many people feel that IR is one of the best frameworks in which to study these changes. Here at Sussex we have a tradition of teaching and studying international relations that spans several decades. We have recently also been recognized as one of the top three specialized International Relations Departments in the United Kingdom.
Our approach to International Relations combines a comprehensive overview of current affairs with a much deeper understanding of the history of world politics, the global political economy, and international security. Our hope is that our students leave university with an up-to-date and thorough grasp of a range of pressing global issues – including globalisation, development, the environment, conflict, the growth of international institutions, gender relations, social movements, and so forth.
We are ourselves also an international – or should it be global? – department, with faculty members and students from all over the world. Together with our fellow colleagues in the School of Global Studies, we can offer regional expertise in virtually all parts of the world, including Europe, North America, the Middle East, East Asia, South Asia and Latin America.
Whether you are visiting our webpages from Britain, continental Europe or further afield, we do hope that you’ll come and visit our pleasant and welcoming campus. You will find that we are located next to the sea, amidst the beautiful Sussex downs, and just outside of the very cosmopolitan city of Brighton – widely described as ‘London by the sea’. Indeed, we are less than an hour away from London and in proximity to both Heathrow and Gatwick airports, making it easy to come for a visit.
The School of Global Studies has Academic Institutional Membership of Chatham House (the Royal Institute of International Affairs). Based in London, Chatham House arguably the UK's best established foreign policy and international affairs think tank. Student's are entitled to discounted membership rates and and able to access events: further details.
