Arts buildings"The School of Humanities is an open, friendly, stimulating and welcoming environment that brings together a group of related disciplines - American studies, Art History, English, Film, History, Media and Cultural studies, Media Practice, Modern Languages, Linguistics, Music and Philosophy - in a common endeavour to study, understand and disseminate knowledge of the historical, literary and artistic manifestations of human existence.

Our student body is diverse and cosmopolitan, and our new curriculum encourages our students to take courses in more than one discipline, both through a set of joint degrees and through interdisciplinary programmes that give access to a wealth of ideas and approaches to thought and culture.

At postgraduate level, the School maintains a strong link between teaching and research, building on the work of the Humanities Graduate Centre, which has for some years demonstrated the value and excitement of inter-disciplinary work. We have a healthy number of postgraduate students and research-active faculty who work together to create a thriving and distinctive research culture.

The idea of the humanities encompasses the performing and creative arts as well as traditional academic disciplines. Focusing on this aspect has already led to a new programme in the study of cinema that is part of a broader goal to enhance the study of visual culture in the School. We will follow this up with developments in music, drama and creative writing that will enrich our intellectual and cultural life."

Stephen Burman
Dean of the School of Humanities
