School of Global Studies

Study Abroad

Where can I go?

The University offers study abroad opportunities at more than 140 universities and colleges worldwide. From this wide range, the School particularly recommends study at one of 20 universities that deliver teaching we know from experience will complement your studies at Sussex. Each of these institutions has received Global Studies students over the last few years.

However, you can also look for other places to study: so long as we have an agreement with the overseas university, and they teach your subject, you should be able to go. We are also actively developing new links in Africa and the Middle East.

Who can advise me?

Each Department has a Study Abroad Tutor, who can help you with advice about where to study, and how this fits with your degree. The Study Abroad office can provide detailed guidance on credits, so you make sure you study the right amount. Your academic advisor should also be able to help you weigh up your options.

Study in Europe

Most Sussex students who study in Europe do so as part of their language degree. However, there are a number of universities that offer tuition in English, as well as an opportunity to improve your language skills.  European study abroad includes the opportunity to benefit from an Erasmus mobility grant to cover some of your expenses. Deadline: 27 January. We recommend the following universities:

  • The University of Amsterdam is the top-ranked university in the Netherlands, and our most popular study abroad destination in Europe, with 17 outgoing students over the last five years. You can take courses across the social sciences, and especially in geography and urban studies.
  • Panteion University, Athens was founded in 1927, and is one of the three oldest universities in Europe dedicated to political science. We currently have a link with the Department of Anthropology, but are exploring other links.
  • The University of Copenhagen has specialist interdisciplinary expertise in the fields of migration, Asian dynamics, and environmental disasters and social resilience.  Our links here are particularly strong in Anthropology, although other students can also apply. Five Global Studies students are in Copenhagen in the 2010-11 academic year.
  • Like Sussex, Gothenberg University has a School of Global Studies, with which we are developing strong links, including faculty visits and exchange. You can study anthropology or area studies within this School, providing a range of courses in English that may be of interest to students across the School.
  • The University of Helsinki is a modern, interdisciplinary University, with which the School has active research links in Anthropology. You would study at the city centre campus, in the Department of Social Sciences, which offers courses that are potentially of interest across the School.
  • Our links at the University of Malta also focus on Anthropology, where there is a strong research tradition and excellent research links.
  • Charles University, Prague was established in 1348, making it one of Europe’s oldest universities. Its most famous professor was Albert Einstein. At CU, you would study in the Faculty of Social Sciences.  We have sent 10 students to Prague in the last five years.

Study in Asia

Our study abroad links in Asia are rapidly developing, and already include partner institutions in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Korea.  We hope to add institutions in China and India to this list in the near future.  Students wishing to study in Taiwan or Korea should talk as soon as possible to the Study Abroad office.  Deadline: 18 November.  Our partner institutions in Asia are:

  • City University of Hong Kong is Asia’s 15th-ranked university. Its Department of International and Asian Studies, within the Faculty of Social Science, is an ideal place to study the wider region, as well as to gain an Asian perspective on globalisation, international organisations, and international development. Scholarships are available to study at CUHK, and we have sent 15 students there over the last 5 years.
  • Korea University is based in Seoul, one of the world’s largest cities. Studying in the Division of International Studies, you would have the opportunity to take courses in your discipline, the wider region, or the Korean language.  Korea University also offers a summer school option.
  • National University Singapore is one of the world’s top universities, with over 30,000 students from 100 different countries. At NUS you would study in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, which has courses not only on Asia but also on Europe. We are building a research partnership with the NUS Asia Research Institute.  Note Singapore is expensive, and popular across Sussex so places are limited, but some scholarships are available.
  • The National University of Taiwan is a new study abroad partner, which has hosted Sussex students since 2007. Benefits include free Chinese language tuition and new student accommodation in central Taipei. We have five students at NTU in 2010-11.
  • International Christian University, Tokyo was founded in 1949, and is Japan’s oldest US-style liberal arts college. Although small, it is a highly prestigious institution, with 10% foreign students (high for Japan) and an outstanding reputation in the social sciences.  Sussex has been sending students to ICU for over 20 years. Note you will need a financial guarantee to study in Tokyo, although scholarships are available.

Study in North America and Australia

Sussex links with North America and Australia are long-established, with the former being linked to our top-ranked American Studies degree, which includes a compulsory year abroad. There are a wide range of North American universities and colleges where Global Studies students can spend a semester or year abroad, although places are only allocated after American Studies student destinations are agreed.  Note also that studying in the US in particular can be expensive, as income guarantees are required to obtain a study visa. Deadline for applications: 18 November.

  • The University of California system, which has a number of well-known and top-ranked colleges including UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara. Note that if you apply to the UC system, you are allocated to a college centrally, rather than choosing a specific college. You can apply for a UC scholarship if you intend to spend the whole second year in California.
  • The University of Alaska, Fairbanks is a particularly popular destination for geographers and others interested in the unique landscapes and cultures of the Arctic.  UAF's location in interior Alaska provides easy access to glaciers, permafrost, the Pacific and Arctic oceans, and the elements of a subarctic climate.
  • Penn State is one of the top public universities in the US, with strong Geography, IR and Anthropology departments.  It is located in University Park, in central Pennsylvania.
  • Arizona State University is the largest public university in the US.  Located across four campuses in downtown Phoenix, it has a Department of Politics and Global Studies, as well as separate Anthropology and Geography degrees.
  • The University of British Columbia is located in Vancouver, one of the world’s truly multicultural cities. Close to the US West Coast and the Canadian rockies, it is a fantastic base as well as a first rate university.
  • The University of Waterloo, in Ontario about an hour from Toronto, has a strong focus on sustainability and environmental research.  Its relatively small-town environment makes for a more relaxed place to study.
  • Monash University is one of Australia’s top universities, and offers a BA degree in Global Studies.  Note that if you go to Australia, you would take a long break in January (their summer) and study from April-August.

Study in Latin America

We have a number of links in Mexico (and also in Chile), and one partner institute – the Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) – where it is possible to study international relations in English.  Note that to study in Monterrey, or elsewhere in Latin America, you will need to have basic Spanish, so you can cope with the practical side of living there.  However, this is a great place to improve your Spanish, whilst improving your knowledge of Latin America and its changing place in the world. Deadline is 27 January, and your level of Spanish will be assessed before you are accepted on the course.
