I recently obtained my PhD in Development Studies at the University of Sussex and I hold an MA in Development Studies from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) University of Sussex. In my doctoral project, I spent 13 months conducting ethnographic research in two villages that were former haciendas (plantations) located on the Venezuelan coast, in Vargas State. My research explored how popular culture became a battlefield for Afro-Venezuelans to contest structural inequalities based on the intersections of race, class and gender under the period of the ‘Bolivarian Revolution’ (1999 - present). I was supervised by Dr Peter Luetchford and Dr Lara Montesinos Coleman. I am currently a Research Associate at the University of Sussex.
