Biography

BA (London, 1966); MSc (London, 1967); PhD (London, 1970); MLitt (Dublin, 1990)

Russell came to Sussex in 1993; previously he had been Professor of Geography at Trinity College Dublin (1986-93) and Lecturer in Geography at the University of Leicester (since 1970). He has held visiting appointments at the University of Malta (1977), Ben Gurion University of the Negev (1981), the University of Trieste (1990) and Cornell (2005). In 1986 he was awarded the Royal Geographical Society's Edward Heath medal for his work on the geography of Europe and the Mediterranean, and he is Honorary Fellow of the Società Geografica Italiana. At Sussex he was Dean of the School of European Studies (1998-2001), Head of the Geography Department (2004-07) and Director of the Sussex Centre for Migration Research (1998-2011). He is editor of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies. During 2012 he will be the Willy Brandt Guest Professor in Migration Studies at the University of Malmö.

Although he has taught widely at undergraduate level in the past, Russell King's teaching has for many years been mostly at postgraduate level, especially on the MA in Migration Studies. He supervises a large group of doctoral students and some postdoctoral fellows, all working on migration. Applicants wishing to study for a doctorate should write in the first instance with a one-page outline of their research ideas to migration@sussex.ac.uk
