Selection guidance

All School Direct candidates must apply via the Teaching Agency and fulfill statutory entry requirements set out by them, including:

  • A UK higher education undergraduate degree - or equivalentNumeracy Skills Test - promo poster
  • Pass grades in English Language and Mathematics - Grade C GCSE or above, or an approved other qualification at an equivalent level.
    If you are applying to teach Primary, you must also have a Science GCSE at Grade C or above.
    NOTE: Equivalent international qualifications require NARIC certification
  • You must pass Professional Skills Tests before you can begin training for which you can book an appointment at any time from now for a date after which you expect to have submitted your application. You need to show evidence of application in order to take the test. You can prepare for the test using practice materials on the Teaching Agency website.
  • Admission is subject to a satisfactory medical report - you are required to meet 'Fitness to Teach' standards - and satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB check).

Additional entry requirements for School Direct (salaried)

  • At least three years' employment experience - not necessarily in a school.

NOTE: School Direct partners may set out additional selection criteria, such as higher degree classifications or a longer period of school/observational experience.
