Department of Economics

Postgraduate study

  • Sussex ranks among the top 100 universities in the world for economics in the QS World University Rankings 2011 and we are one of the top universities in Europe for economics in the Centre for Higher Education Development’s CHE Excellence Ranking (2009).
  • In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 100 per cent of our economics research was rated as recognised internationally or higher, and 60 per cent rated as internationally excellent or higher.
  • While much of our research is policy oriented, and therefore responsive to external events (such as European economic integration and reform of the former socialist economies), the highest importance is attached to basing applied work on sound theoretical foundations, as well as utilising best-practice quantitative techniques in estimating and testing models.
  • Members of faculty have attracted project funding from the Ford Foundation, the ESRC, the Nuffield Foundation, the Department for International Development, the Department of Trade and Industry, the European Commission, and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Our range of taught Masters degrees reflects the research interests of our faculty in economics, development and international economics, and international finance. If you have not got a first degree in Economics, we offer a Graduate Diploma.

We also offer an MPhil and PhD in Economics. Currently we have about 30 doctoral students studying under the close supervision of faculty members. Research students are given their own space to study (usually a shared office) and there are excellent computing and library facilities. Their research topics are diverse, including as examples fair trade, poverty in Ghana and exchange rate stability.
