The Department of Economics at Sussex enjoys an international reputation for its predominantly applied research mainly in the areas of development, labour and trade.
A key part of the Department’s research is undertaken by its currently more than 30 excellent PhD students, working on a wide range of topics in these areas. Research in the department has attracted substantial external financial support from among others ESRC, DFID and the European Commission; and much of its research is linked to the needs of policy-making bodies in Europe and internationally.
The Department promotes an active research environment which fosters collaborative research within the University (the Institute for Development Studies, Department of History, Psychology, Geography, etc.) and externally (e.g. LSE, ODI, DIW Berlin, WTI Bern, Paris School of Economics, and many developing country partners). Its lively research environment is also built around its weekly departmental seminar, regular internal workshops and weekly DPhil advanced economics reading groups.
Our research in development focus on a number of areas with special attention to applied economics, econometrics and field work:
• Labour and Education Economics • Poverty, Inequality and Wellbeing • Economic History and Development • International Trade • Agricultural and Rural Development • Resources, Environment and Climate Change • Migration
