Sussex has a long tradition of fruitful collaboration between Literature and Philosophy, the new Centre builds on this tradition by providing a focus for current research conducted at Sussex and by developing new areas of enquiry that address issues that arise at the intersection of the two disciplines.
Activities and projects initiated by the Centre include an annual conference, workshops, graduate events, fellowships, bursaries and web- publication and dissemination of research material. Please check resources for links to various useful and interesting websites.
Forthcoming events: 3 graduate conferences for 2010: on Celan, Beckett, & Blanchot; on Critical theory and utopia; on Phenomenology details will be posted very soon!
News: Professor Robert Bernasconi (Memphis) has been made Honorary Professor in the School of Humanities, Department of Philosophy from 1 January 2009 to 31 January 2011. The director of the Centre from 1st of January 2010 will be Dr Adriana Bontea.
Information about past events and copies of papers or abstracts from seminars held at the centre and our very successful inaugural confrence in 2008 are placed in the Archive section.
Since October 2008, the Centre has established links with the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the University of Latvia. We are in the process of establishing further academic connections with the hope of sponsoring joint activities for the study of philosophy and literature with our colleagues in Latvia. See the associates section for further information.
You are welcome to browse the online journals, blogs, translations -notably Redmond's translation of Adorno's Negative Dialectics- in the Resources page located in Links. New feature: the KantHegel blog!
If you plan to visit us, please note that the University has excellent rail and bus links to Brighton and to Lewes. Falmer train station is conveniently located at the edge of the campus; see the inaugural conference page for links on travel and accommodation. If you are coming from London by train you can try either the St Pancras International or the Victoria stations. Both run regular services to Brighton.
