First ever BMEc Teaching and Learning Away Day a resounding success

The first ever BMEc Teaching and Learning Away Day was held on 12 June 2017 at the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts. The day was well attended by 90 members of BMEc teaching and Professional Services staff.

The purpose and objectives of the day were:

  • to share and build on each other’s teaching experiences and expertise
  • to inform your research and teaching practice
  • to input into the School Teaching and Learning Strategy.

Dawn Howard, the School's Director of Teaching Learning welcomed attendees followed by Head of School Steven McGuire, who delivered an update on the Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework and the School Teaching and Learning Strategy.

The keynote speaker was Gary Luffman, Director of Think Change Consulting, who delivered an interactive presentation on Evidence Based Teaching and Learning.

The morning session concluded with quick fire  “Ignite” presentations by six colleagues, including the School's six recent winners of Student-Led Teaching Awards on their teaching practices and experiences.

Over lunch there was an opportunity to network and visit stands set up by the BMEc Business Liaison and Placements Team, Business Resources from Academic Services at the Library, the Skills Hub from the Careers and Employability Centre, Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and a demonstration of the Teaching and Learning Toolkit.

Workshops

In the afternoon, the attendees participated in two workshops:

  • Working with Large Groups and International Cohorts
Tab Betts and David Walker from Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL)
  • Strategies for Balancing Teaching and Research
Liz Sage from Academic Development and Quality Enhancement  (ADQE)

Director of SPRU Johan Schot then reviewed and reflected upon the day, before Dawn Howard closed proceedings by awarding certificates to the day's presenters and thanking everyone for attending. The day finished with a Pimms reception on the lawn outside the Attenborough Centre.

The Away Day was a great success and an opportunity to share experiences and expertise.

The next BMEc Teaching and Learning Away Day is planned for January 2018.
