Emerging Research Landscapes

JoAnn McGregor Professor JoAnn McGregor

The first Sussex Africa Centre event - 'Emerging Research Landscapes' - took place on Thursday December 12, 2013, from 3-6pm, in Fulton 104.

Professor JoAnn McGregor - the principal lead in the Sussex Africa Centre Initiative - and the SAC Postgraduate Committee introduced the Centre, followed by a panel and Q&A, which showcased current Africa-focused projects from PhD researchers across a variety of disciplines here at Sussex:

Florence Dafe (IDS): 'The structural power of capital and the politics of central banking in Sub-Saharan Africa'
Yusuf Dirie (Science and Policy Research Unit): 'Progress as Alibi? Framings of Pastoral Development in the Horn of Africa'
Francesca Salvi (Department of Education): 'Of Bellies and Books: Unpacking the Education/Pregnancy Nexus in Mozambique'
Ross Wignall (Department of Anthropology): 'Big and Tough: Moral Masculinities on a YMCA Sports Leaders Course in the UK and The Gambia'.

There were drinks and nibbles afterwards to enjoy with an exhibition of objects, photographs and posters drawn from emerging PhD research, reflecting the Centre's concerns.
