The School of Media, Arts, and Humanities recognises the importance of practice-based research and scholarship to the environment of the School, and especially to specific subject groups. The School also acknowledges the high costs of projects involving creative technology/resources/facilities, the challenges of securing external funding in this area, and the particular difficulties of gathering momentum for new projects without significant funding to get started. In response, the School has developed a new initiative – two Creative Practice Project Awards – to be piloted in the academic year 2023/24. The scheme will provide two awards of up to £7500 dedicated to funding practice-based research/scholarship. All faculty are eligible to apply regardless of contract type, provided their proposed project is focused on practice-led or practice-based research/scholarship. Applications will be assessed on a combination of: - the quality of the project proposal. - its strategic importance to the School (i.e. in terms of pedagogic innovation, contribution to the School’s engagement profile, or to the REF). - a rationale explaining why other traditional funding routes cannot support the project, for example, due to high production costs or the use of creative technologies/resources/facilities. - Projects must necessarily involve practice as a key element of the project’s methodology. The applications will be considered by a panel made up of the Associate Dean for Research, the School Senior Research Manager, another Associate Dean from MAH, and at least three Heads of Subject from key practice-oriented subjects (CCP, Drama, Music). If a Subject Head submits an application, then they will be asked to nominate another colleague to deputise on the review panel. The call for 2023/24 closed on 6 October 2023. Funding will be awarded by the end of October 2023 and must be spent by the end of July 2024. The successful applicants will be expected to submit a report detailing their project and associated expenditure after the conclusion of the award.
