ESW Template

Deciding your module status

The following guidance is relevant to all non-ITE teaching staff in ESW. If you work in ITE your template is unchanged. Please contact your ITE lead if you have any questions.

There are three potential routes for the application of your School template to your module. Read the definitions below and decide which status applies to your module, then follow the appropriate guidance. If you are unsure which status applies to your module then please contact TEL at TEL@sussex.ac.uk

Guidance for an existing Canvas module which has used an old template or no template

A previously run module that did not have a school approved template applied to it in past years

If you are the convenor of a module that has been run before, but that did not incorporate the ESW 21/22 template then you will need to:

  • Apply the 22/23 ESW template from Commons

  • Update the template by adding text. You may be able to copy and paste from your handbook or the previous year’s Canvas site into relevant pages and sections of the template. There isn't much advantage in importing materials from last year as they need to be embedded within the template framework. However, if you want you can import some of the content from the previous year’s Canvas module. See the ESW - importing selected content guide for step-by-step instructions for doing this.

  • Edit the weekly topic headings on the Home Page.

NOTE: In order to maintain the template styles, do not delete all the text before you start writing. When pasting text select "Paste and Match Styles" so the previous formatting is not applied. Remember that your page has a version history and you can return to the last saved version of the page.

Guidance for an existing Canvas module using the 20/21 Education template

In ESW a number of Canvas templates have been used. Social Work was an early adopter of Canvas templates and had one of its own, some used the Easy Template, an early generic Canvas template and others have used the Education Template.

Only the Education template is similar to the new ESW template. If you are using another template you should probably consider following the same guidance for an existing Canvas module site without a template.

Guidance for a new Canvas mdule

A new module is a Canvas module that has not previously been run and had no prior Canvas module site.

If you are the convenor of a new module that has not previously been run and has no prior Canvas module site then you will need to:

  • Import the 22/23 ESW template from Commons.

  • Edit the Pages. The ESW template includes Pages with general information and weekly topic pages. Each page in the template will need to have content added where indicated.

  • Edit the weekly topic headings on the Home Page.

NOTE: In order to maintain the template styles, do not delete all the text before you start writing. When pasting text select "Paste and Match Styles'' so the previous formatting is not applied. Remember that your page has a version history and you can return to the last saved version of the page.
