Canvas module templates

Using a School-approved Canvas module template is part of the University of Sussex Online Learning Baseline. Learn about Canvas module templates: what are they and how can you apply a template to your module?

Canvas module templates are a collection of template Canvas pages and module settings for your module site. The content of the templates are agreed by schools and it is compulsory that a school approved template is used for all modules.

The templates are designed to ensure:

  • all necessary information is clearly available in your module site
  • there is consistency for students studying across different modules and Schools
  • module sites are accessible to all

Your schools will be making decisions about their approach to templating of modules. This will be coordinated by the schools' Director's of Teaching and Learning.

The schools have advised that the following templates have been approved:

Module homepage

This page contains:

  • Links to key information within the module site.
  • Direct links to support provided bythe University.
  • A weekly structure for weeks one to eleven within the teaching block. These can be titled by week or topic depending on the module.
  • Quick links to Sussex Direct for students to view important information such as their timetable and module results.

Module information page

This page contains:

  • A module introduction including a welcome from the module convenor.
  • The module learning outcomes.
  • Assessment information mapped to learning outcomes.
  • Information on the teaching methods that students can expect in the module.
  • Communication and engagement statements.
  • Technical requirements for the module.

Module contacts page

This page contains:

  • Contact details of the module convenor and other teaching staff, including email addresses and student hours
  • Contact details for further support, for example the School office.

Weekly content pages

This page contains:

  • A title or topic for the week.
  • An introduction to the week.
  • The weekly learning outcomes.
  • A list of the activities that students should complete that week, including an estimate of how long they should spend on each activity.
  • A link to the module reading list.
  • A section for content and resources to direct students to activities and resources and guide them through the week’s content.
Sussex Template A week or topic page

Though broadly similar in structure and elements, the second example template emphasises assignment guidance. This template would be particularly suited to a module that is structured by topics with readings per week. Some screenshots below do not display the whole page, you can browse through the full example template within Canvas.

This page contains:

  • A link to download the University of Sussex Online Learning Baseline document (to be deleted before its published to students).
  • Links to key information within the module site.
  • A weekly structure for weeks one to eleven within the teaching block. These can be titled by week or topic depending on the module.
  • Quick links to Sussex Direct for students to view important information such as their timetable and module results.
  • Direct links to support provided by the University.

A page introducing the module to students.

This page contains:

  • A module introduction, including a welcome from the module convenor and the module learning outcomes.
  • Teaching methods and expectations for student engagement.
  • A communication statement.
  • Assessment information include information about how the module will be assessed and weighted.
  • Links to further resources and help.

Assignments & Guidance

A page that contains further information about the module assessments.

This page contains:

  • An introduction to each assessment with guidance.
  • How students will receive feedback
  • Information about how feedback will be returned to students.
  • Guidance on the expected referencing style.
  • Help with language and writing skills.
  • Information about academic misconduct.

This page contains:

  • Contact details of the module convenor and other teaching staff, including email addresses and student hours
  • Contact details for further support, for example the School office.

A page for each week containing the activities and resources which students should engage with.

This page contains:

  • An outline for the week/topic.
  • Links to activities and resources that students should engage with.
  • Suggesting readings for the week.

To apply a template:

  1. Log into Canvas.
  2. Click on the Commons link in the Global navigation menu.
  3. If this is the first time you have used Commons, click ‘Authorise’ to provide Commons with access to your account.
  4. Click ‘Filter’ at the top right of the screen and select ‘Only University of Sussex Approved Resources’.
  5. Search for the name of the template you want to use (e.g. the name of your School)
  6. Click on the title of the template.
  7. Click ‘Import/Download’.
  8. Click the tick box next to the module you wish to import the template into (do not click ‘All’).
  9. Click the ‘Import into course’ button
  10. Return to the Canvas module by navigating to your Dashboard.

After importing the template, you will find further guidance within the template files to help you edit it and add your module content.
