Research staff and students
The Doctoral School is a distinctive development at Sussex which sits beside our Academic Schools. The School recognises that the 1,000 postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers at Sussex are a fundamental part of the University's intellectual vitality and seeks to enable you to feel fully integrated as members of this wider research community.
The Doctoral School provides an exciting environment through which all researchers across the institution can interact. While researchers are, of course, an integral part of the academic community within their own discipline, there are also opportunities for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers to come together through the Doctoral School. Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers are able to share their interests and become involved in new or related areas, particularly in confronting the major complex problems that necessitate exploration of ideas at the intersection of disciplines.
At Sussex, we recognise that studying for a doctorate is a major personal and intellectual commitment which requires high levels of academic and personal support. The Doctoral School therefore crucially oversees the quality assurance, monitoring and evaluation of activities to ensure that the University's high expectations and standards are maintained. We are committed to improving the quality of the academic and social experience for researchers at Sussex.
Each Academic School has its own Director of Doctoral Studies, and together with a dedicated central team, the Doctoral School champions the cause of the next generation of researchers throughout the University.
