Welcome to the latest issue of the Sussex Researcher. We are very pleased to announce our very first Careers & Enterprise Day on Thursday 14th June. This will be an excellent opportunity to hear speakers from a variety of backgrounds share their experiences of careers outside academia, freelancing, and creating a commercial enterprise from academic research. Booking is essential, so if interested remember to follow the links in the section below.
Also coming up in June, the Sussex Impact Awards are open for applications from researchers from any area and at any level, who is involved in research and its impact. In past years research staff were well represented amongst the winners and it would be great to build upon the success at this year's awards, which will be announced at Sussex Impact Day on Tuesday 19th June 2018.

Spotlight on Dr Priya Deshingkar
Senior Research Fellow at Sussex Centre for Migration Research
Our research is about migration, poverty and development, so what we are really trying to do is unpick the relationship between migration and poverty, and ultimately development. The idea is to understand the role of poverty as a driver for migration, as well as what impacts migration has on poverty.
Governments all over the world need to wake up to the fact that people from rural areas migrating to urban areas are leaving home for a variety of reasons. They want to make a different life for themselves but at the moment the system isn’t geared up to that, it’s very hostile and anti-migration, and migrants often face greater barriers travelling within their own country sometimes than they might going to another country.

Sussex Impact Awards 2018 Has your work had an impact on society? If so, enter your work to receive a Sussex Impact Award. Impact Awards are open for applications from any member of staff at the University of Sussex, from any area and at any level, who is involved in research and its impact.* ‘Impact’ means the benefits and effects of research, beyond the academy. The University intends to make Impact Awards across the following fields. The final number of awards will be determined by the range and quality of applications received:
- Culture and creativity;
- Commerce and economy;
- Policy and practice;
- Public engagement
This year's awards will be announced following the 2018 Sussex Impact Day on Tuesday 19th June at a celebratory reception in the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (ACCA). Each winning entry will receive a certificate and £1,000 paid into a personal research support account to use in support of their research and impact work. Deadline for applications: midnight Tuesday 8th May 2018.

Psychology Research Staff Showcase Date: Wednesday 23rd May, 13:00pm-17:00pm Location: Conference Centre, University of Sussex The Psychology Research Staff Showcase is a half-day event (from 1:00 – 5:00 PM) consisting of a series of short, TED-style talks by postdocs and research staff in Psychology and Neuroscience, followed by a wine & canape networking reception (5:00 – 6:30 PM). It's free and open to everyone within and outside of the University. The Showcase will showoff the range of diverse and state-of-the-art research being conducted by emerging scientists within the School of Psychology at the University of Sussex. Its goal is to encourage new ideas and collaborations, and importantly, to communicate the social impact and implications of this research to University staff, students, and the community at large. The event kicks-off with a two-part keynote by renowned neuroscientist Professor Sophie Scott (University College London), who will share her research on the neural mechanisms of vocal communication, as well as the challenges and achievements she has experienced along her path to becoming a leading research scientist. The event is organised by the Psychology Postdoc Network ( Kasia Pisanski & Claire Dixon), with sponsorship from the ESRC DTC Pathway Development Fund and Sussex School of Psychology.

Sussex chemist wins prestigious competition Dr Samantha Furfari has won a Royal Society of Chemistry poster competition at the Dalton 2018 meeting, held at the University of Warwick from 3-5 April. The meeting hosted the annual RSC Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson Dalton Poster Symposium, which provides an opportunity for inorganic chemists, who are at an early stage of their career, to present their work to peers and senior representatives from industry and academia. This year Dr Furfari won the postdoctoral category of the competition, receiving a certificate and travel bursary to facilitate her attendance at a conference of her choice. Dr Furfari, who presented her research, ‘ Investigating the substituents effects of trans aklynyl-cyaphide complexes’, works in Dr Ian Crossley’s Lab as a Research Fellow on an ESPRC-funded project.

Connecting with business for impact: Industrial Strategy opportunities Date: Wednesday, 2nd May 2018,1:15pm – 2:45pm
Location: Fulton Room 201, University of Sussex This seminar will offer practical guidance and further background on the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and the opportunities for you. The Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) will provide opportunities to apply for funding based on projects in which researchers have created productive partnerships with UK businesses in the identified ‘challenge’ areas. The fund is part of the government’s £4.7 billion increase in research and development over 4 years, particularly focusing on the following 4 Grand Challenges: Artificial Intelligence & the Data Economy; Clean Growth; Future of Mobility; and Healthy Ageing. By the end of this session, participants will:
- Understand more about the expectations and guidance of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund calls
- Feel more confident in developing collaborations with businesses, with an understanding of where to find funding
- Better understand how to move forward with existing or new business-related ideas and opportunities

Open Science Matters: Making Science More Efficient?
Marie Jahoda Annual Lecture Date: Thursday, 10th May 2018, 18:30pm – 20:00pm
Location: Fulton A Lecture Theatre, University of Sussex Open science aims to accelerate scientific progress to turn what is discovered into benefits for all, underpinned by the assumption that technology now allows researchers to collaborate, connect and share knowledge more easily than ever. But are publishers, funders and institutions moving quickly enough to support the rapid changes required for researchers to effectively adopt and navigate this new scholarly landscape? This lecture will offer fascinating reflections on the potential opportunities and benefits of open science and the main policy imperatives for the transition to more open and collaborative ways of doing research.The lecture aims to provoke radical thinking around what the future of science should look like, and what we need to do to achieve it. The Marie Jahoda Annual Lecture was launched in 1997 to celebrate the outstanding contributions that Professor Marie Jahoda CBE made to SPRU. The 2018 Jahoda Lecture will be given by Liz Allen. Liz is Director of Strategic Initiatives at F1000, where she is involved in shaping new initiatives and partnerships to promote and foster open research.

UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships scheme
The scheme aims to develop, retain, attract and sustain research and innovation talent in the UK. Providing up to seven years of funding, for at least 550 early-career researchers and innovators, the scheme will tackle difficult and novel challenges.

Research grants
These provide seed-corn funding for early-career scientists for research within the society’s remit in the life and physical sciences. Grants are worth up to £20,000 each over one year.

These support postdoctoral researchers who aim to become independent scientists leading their own groups in the field of public health. Fellowships are tenable for five years and cover salaries and all associated research expenses.
