Elements Research Profile workshop - 12 November (12-1pm) Elements is the Current Research Information System (CRIS) now in use at the University. Elements supports the management of research activities by providing one single point of organisation, presentation and reporting for all scholarly and research activities, including research outputs. It also hosts the University staff profile pages. What are the benefits of Elements?
- A single point of organisation, presentation and reporting for all scholarly and research activities
- Enhanced usability of research systems
- Increased external visibility of research expertise, helping facilitate research collaboration
- Improved reporting for research capability and research activity
- Improved tools for research assessment exercises
- Existing publications automatically pulled across from Sussex Research Online
- Integration with author identifiers, such as ORCiD, and external databases
On Friday 12th November, Bethany Logan, Academic Services Librarian, will deliver a training workshop that will demonstrate the university's central research management system, Elements. The workshop will explore the benefits of building your digital profile to showcase your research and teaching activities.

University of Sussex unveil climate events as part of ESRC's Festival of Social Science The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science is an annual celebration of the social sciences and a key element of ESRC’s commitment to promote awareness of UK social science research to new audiences. This year the festival will be held from 1-30 November 2021 and will feature exciting and creative events run by its 34 partners – including the University of Sussex. With the Festival taking place simultaneously with COP26 – the UN Climate Change Conference – the focus will be on the environment – in addition to a range of other topics, such as the social and economic effects of the covid pandemic. The University of Sussex will be hosting a number of online events which aim to draw wider awareness to the climate change debate – as well as a number of in-person events designed to engage the local population. Research Associate opportunity - Shaping Social Mobility: Education & Employment Cumberland Lodge, the educational charity in Windsor Great Park, are seeking to appoint a freelance Research Associate to support their forthcoming conference, ‘Shaping Social Mobility: Education & Employment’. This role will include researching and writing a pre-conference briefing document and a post-conference report summarising key recommendations for change, and is open to applications from motivated PhD students and early-career academics and includes a salary of £3,000 inclusive of VAT. The Research Associate will be required to participate in a residential cross-sector conference in Windsor Great Park (7-8 March), an online consultation, and a central London report launch, later next year. 'No Health without Mental Health’ – Mental Health in an Unequal World
Mental health was long neglected in funding, policy, practice and research. Over the last 20 years, the Global Mental Health movement has highlighted the significant burden of disease and the large treatment gap associated with mental ill-health, with the aim of improving the lives of people with mental illness worldwide. Dr Maya Semrau, Senior Research Fellow in Implementation Research at BSMS, delivered an illuminating talk, as part of the 'Diversity in Medicine' series of events, delving into some of these issues, arguing that there can be ‘no health without mental health’. The talk was chaired by Dr Arianne Shahvisi, Senior Lecturer in Ethics at BSMS.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme for Overseas Researchers 2022
This scheme is for scholars in the UK who are at an early stage of their career and wish to conduct research in Japan for a period of 12-24 months. The scheme provides the opportunity for highly qualified young researchers based in the UK to engage and collaborate with leading research groups in universities and other research institutions in Japan. The scheme provides subsistence funding as well as a settling-in allowance and a return air ticket.

New investigator research grant – molecular and cellular medicine
This supports researchers who are capable of becoming independent principal investigators and who are ready to take the next step towards that goal within the areas of molecular and cellular medicine. Grants are tenable for three years.

Career development fellowship
This enables scientists without a salaried independent position to set up their own independent research group in any area of CRUK’s funding remit, with the exception of drug discovery and clinical trials. The fellowship is tenable for a period of six years or equivalent duration for part-time working.

Research fellowships
These support early-career non-clinical researchers beginning an independent project on Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Fellowships include a salary and up to £20,000 per year for up to three years.
