Dr Ian Carter, Director of Research and Enterprise
A new national award has been named after Dr Ian Carter, the University’s Director of Research and Enterprise.
The Association for Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA) has created the Carter Award for Excellence in Research Management and Administration, in recognition of Dr Carter’s “dedicated and outstanding contribution” to the association, particularly as Chair of its Board of Directors.
During Ian’s seven years as Chair, he has guided ARMA through a number of developments and major changes, including
- delivery of an expanded training and development programme;
- substantially increasing the number of members;
- development and launch of a Professional Development Framework that will underpin a new set of qualifications;
- and creation of a new strategic plan and support structure for the organisation.
Nominations for the inaugural award will be sought in early 2014, with the first prize given in June that year.
The award will be presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated an exceptional impact on the enhancement of the research environment in the UK.
Dr Carter joined Sussex in 2008 from the University of Liverpool. His career has spanned industry, an interdisciplinary research centre, and university administration and management.
At Sussex, he has overseen the transformation of the Research and Enterprise Division and is leading the University’s preparations for the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).
