Early Taught Postgraduate Resits

Guidence to taught postgraduate students offered a resit of a failed module in the Summer Vacation Assessment Period.

Most PGT students will be offered an early resit of any taught module that has been failed.

These resits will be scheduled in the Summer Vacation Assessment Period.

Submissions will be due by 16:00 Thursday 02 September 2013.

Examinations will be held between Monday 26 August 2013 and Friday 6th September 2013.

Some Schools are not offering resits in the vacation assessment period this year or are not offering resits of particular modules. Such resits will be offered when the exam board meets in the Autumn term and will be scheduled in the mid-year assessment period 2013/14.

You will need to decide quite quickly whether or not to take the resits that you have been registered for. If you decide not to take a resit at this time, a mark of zero will be recorded, but the examination board will be guided to offer you a second resit to be taken in the mid-year assessment period (the above will apply if you register to take the resit but do not attend/submit the assessment).

The exam board will meet in the Autumn term to consider your performance.

To receive a Masters award you need to achieve 180 credits and a stage mean mark of 50% (60% for Merit, 70% for Distinction). Provided that you have achieved a stage mean mark of 50% or above across all your modules, up to 30 credits for modules in which you have a marginal fail (45%-49%) will be automatically compensated. The exam board has discretion to also condone non-marginal fails up to 30 credits subject to your having achieved a 50% stage mean and met the course learning outcomes. The sum of compensated and condoned credits cannot exceed 30 credits.

If you take a resit the mark will be capped at 50% and will replace your original mark, even if the resit mark is lower than the original mark.

If you presented evidence of mitigating circumstances and this was accepted by the Mitigating Evidence Claims Committee, and if your mark for an impaired module is out of line with the rest of your profile the exam board will take this into consideration when it meets in the Autumn term and may uncap the resit mark. You should be aware that the mark achieved at resit/sit will stand, even if it is lower than the mark you achieved at the first attempt.

Therefore, it may be worth accepting a marginal fail (45%-49%) and not seeking to raise it via a resit (as this will be capped), with the expectation that it will be compensated where the stage mean of 50% is achieved.

If you have a number of resits and are currently finishing your dissertation, it may be best not to take all your resits at this time. As stated above, the exam board will be guided to offer you a second resit opportunity for any resits not taken/passed in the vacation assessment period. Second resits will be offered in the mid-year assessment period 2012/13.
