Workshops, tutorials and support with study skills

What type of support is best for you?

  • I’m an international student and need help with my English.

    You should contact the Sussex Centre for Language Studies who provide Academic Development support.
     
  • I would like some writing help with a specific piece of work.
    You can arrange a one-to-one tutorial with a writing fellow.
     
  • I want some general study skills help with writing, time management, using the library etc. 

    You can book a place on a study skills workshop, come to a drop-in or contact a student mentor for help. You can also use the online S3 study skills exercises.

Study Skills Workshops

The Student Support Unit runs small group workshops for students at all levels every Wednesday at 1.30 - 2.30 in Pevensey 1, 2E8. Places are limited. To book a place call: 01273 877466.

  • 15th May Revision and Managing Exams
  • 22nd May Exams: How to cope
  • 5th June Writing Dissertations
  • 12th June Planning for next academic year

Library Drop-ins and Workshops

The library offers drop-in sessions for students at all levels. They will take place in the Open Learning Space in the Library and will run from Week 5 onwards at the following times:

  • Mondays 15:00-16:00
  • Wednesdays 14:00-15:00
  • Thursdays 12:00-13:00
  • Fridays 11:00-12:00

No need to book, just drop in!

They also run literature searching workshops for masters level students. You can book a place online.

Academic Development and English Language

Sussex Centre for Language Studies provides workshops, drop-in sessions and tutorials for full-time international students with english as an additional language. You can register for all these services by filling in the online registration form.

Spring term workshops for 2013:

  • Frequent grammar errors in students' academic writing II: Tenses
  • Looking at outlines and titles
  • Referencing and avoiding plagiarism
  • Developing academic style
  • Making the most of academic tutorials and understanding feedback
  • How to structure longer papers
  • How to approach a literature review
  • Criticism revisited
  • Final stages: introductions, conclusions, abstracts 

Better Writing Tutorials

The Royal Literary Fund (RLF) Fellowship scheme provides support for students who would like to improve their writing skills for their essays, projects or dissertations. You can make an appointment to visit one of the two RLF Writers-in-Residence for a one-to-one tutorial of approximately fifty minutes. Please note: You will need to provide a specific piece of your own writing to discuss.

You can make an appointment for a tutorial through Study Direct.

Student Mentors

Student Mentors are second and third year undergraduates and postgraduate students who have been trained to offer advice and support to other students. Mentors can offer you advice and support on a range of issues including how to manage your time or improve your study skills. They can also point you in the right direction for other support services at the university.
