A journal is a publication that is issued at regular intervals, usually monthly or quarterly. Journals are sometimes called serials, magazines or periodicals. Journals are one of the best sources of information for new research. Also, they often contain reviews of recent books and articles.

Quality journals are refereed or peer reviewed. This means that a second opinion by experts in the field is sought before the article is published.

Some journals are available in print in the Library but a far greater number are available electronically. You can use the Library catalogue to search for most of the Library's journals.

At present, you cannot search for individual journal articles on the Library catalogue, so you need to search for the journal itself. You may have a reference for a journal article that looks like this:

Fry, M. (1989) Financial development: theories and recent experience. Oxford Review of Economic Policy, Vol. 5 (4).

Try to find this article using the Library catalogue. In the search box below, type in the name of the journal. In our example, the journal is the "Oxford Review of Economic Policy". Click Search then look at your results. You may notice that the journal is listed as a "Serial". This is just a similar term for a journal.

This journal is available electronically. If you click on the link that says "Connect to this resource online", you will be taken to the electronic journal. You will then need to locate volume five (1989).
