Summer School in Mumbai

Intersectional Inequalities: Migration, Sexualities and Gender

Global Studies, in partnership with the University Global Engagement Office and the Tata Institute for Social Sciences, Mumbai (TISS), has just secured funding for a two-week summer school, to take place in June 2020 (provisional dates, 15-27 June). The course will be co- taught by Professor Priya Deshingkar (Geography) and Dr Paul Boyce (Anthropology) and Professor Ashwini Kumar and Dr Ketki Ranade (TISS). It will will engage with theoretical debates, emerging empirical evidence and challenges for policy in the fields of migration, urbanization, sexualities, gender and socio-economic marginalization in India and South Asia. It will include lectures, participatory seminars and field visits to informal settlements and NGOs working with marginalised groups in Mumbai. The summer school will be not be part of degree classification but will be formally assessed.

The summer school is open to all current second year Global Studies undergraduates and up to 30 places are available. Thanks to generous funding from the British Council, we are able to cover flights, accommodation, subsistence, tuition and other minor expenses. Students are asked to raise £200 as their contribution to the total cost and pay for any additional personal expenditure. Selection will be competitive, based on a combination of personal statement and evidence of commitment to academic work. We will prioritise those students who might otherwise not be able to participate in study abroad due to family commitments, financial circumstances, or lack of experience and confidence for this type of initiative.
