National Insurance

You will need a National Insurance (NI) number when you start work. Find out how to apply for one if you are a non-UK student

Applying for a National Insurance number

Call the National Insurance number application line on 0800 141 2075 (Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm) if you need a NI number. You will have to do this if you are a non-UK student and want to work while you study.

You will either be sent an application form in the post or invited to an interview at the local Jobcentre Plus in Brighton. You will be asked to bring documents with you, such as a passport, birth certificate or driving licence.

  • It can take a few weeks to receive your NI number
  • You can start work before it arrives, as long as you can prove your right to work in the UK
  • International Student Support has a useful guide to working in the UK during your studies.

You can find out more about applying for a National Insurance number from GOV.UK
