The Outlook icon in my taskbar has stopped working.

This problem sometimes happens in the Windows 7 standard staff desktop.

The symptom is that the following error message is shown when you click on the Outlook shortcut icon in your taskbar:

Outlook lost icon message

If this happens, click the Yes button.  You will notice the Outlook icon disappears from your taskbar:

Now, start Outlook either by double-clicking the desktop icon on your desktop (if present),

Outlook 2013 desktop icon        or     Outlook 2010 desktop icon

or from your main menu by clicking the Start button, then choose All Programs, then Microsoft Office then Microsoft Outlook.

When Outlook has started, you'll notice its icon appear in the taskbar:

Outlook 2013 taskbar icon    or    Outlook icon in taskbar

Now right-click on the Outlook icon in the taskbar, and click on Pin this program to taskbar in the pop-up menu:

Pin Outlook icon to taskbar

Once this has been done, you can drag-and-drop the icon to another position in the taskbar if desired.

Note however that although the above solution should take immediate effect, the problem may recur at a later time.  You may find it easier just to start Outlook from the desktop icon.
