I can't get IBM Cognos 10 Reports to work on my Mac using Safari.

IBM Cognos 10 only certifies Firefox on the Mac (Safari and Google Chrome are not supported).  You may need to do one or more of the following to get Cognos 10 reports running on your Mac:  1. install adobe reader; 2. get Firefox; 3. configure Firefox to open PDF reports (detailed instructions below)


A. Install Adobe Reader (if not already installed)


  1. You will need to know what version of Mac OS X you are using on your Mac:
  2. Select the Apple menu and "About This Mac". The version number (10.x.x) is listed. Close the window.
  3. Use a browser (Safari or Firefox) to visit:
  4. Select the version of Mac OS X you are using from the drop-down button.
  5. Click the "Download now" button
  6. A disk image of the installer is downloaded with a name like AdbeRdr1000_en_US.dmg and typically in your Download folder.
  7. If using Safari, this image will download and open and the installation program window will appear automatically. If this does not happen, double click on the file image file (AdbeRdr1000_en_US.dmg) to open it and then double click on the installation program "Adobe Reader X Installer.pkg"
  8. At the "Welcome to the Adober Reader Installer" window, click the "Continue" button.
  9. At the read me window, click the "Continue" button.
  10. At the "Standard Install" window, click the "Install" button.
  11. You will be prompted for your Mac user name and password.
  12. A status window will appear. Once installation is done, click the "Close" button.


B. You must use Firefox on your Mac to access the COGNOS reporting pages properly. You can download the latest version of Firefox by visiting


Once Firefox is installed you will also need to make some configuration changes to ensure that it uses Adobe Reader to process PDF reports.


  1. Open Firefox
  2. From the Firefox menu, select Options...
  3. Select the “Applications” tab
  4. Scroll down to "Portable Document File (PDF)" in list of apps that is presented.
  5. In the actions list next to it select “Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)
  6. Close the Firefox options window
  7. Quit Firefox


*** Access COGNOS reports

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Access the COGNOS system  ( -  Cognos v10 link) and verify that reporting works.

3.   Depending on version installed, Firefox may display message ‘Untrusted Connection’  in which case

a.       Click ‘I understand the risks

b.      Click Add Exception

c.       Click confirm security exception
