Induction for new students - Starting with us

Pre-book free coach service

You can now book your place on our free coach service from Heathrow Airport. Please complete every section of the form unless you cannot yet provide certain information - e.g. accommodation allocation - which you should let us know as soon as you have that additional information by emailing

Information about making your own alternative arrangements for travelling to the University of Sussex can be found by visiting our webpage here:

What happens when I arrive at Heathrow?

There will be Sussex representatives wearing blue University of Sussex t-shirts at Terminals 3 and 5 who will direct you to Terminal 5 (Arrivals Level). This may involve you taking the free Heathrow Express train which travels between terminals.  You can find information about travelling between terminals here.  When you reach Terminal 5, another team-member will direct you to a seating area just beyond number 15 (Caffé Nero) on the Terminal 5 Arrivals map where we normally meet to wait for the coach. From here, we will then assist you in boarding the coach (which normally departs from Stop 16 on the map) and accompany students on the coach back to Brighton.

You need to reach the Terminal 5 at least 30 minutes before your scheduled coach departure time. The coaches will leave promptly at the designated times. If your flight is delayed we will do our best to get you on the next available coach (if there is another service that day) but this depends on availability and cannot be guaranteed.

We strongly recommend that you book a place on a coach that departs at least two hours after your flight arrival time. This would allow you enough time to get through immigration control, customs and baggage reclaim, and to reach Terminal 5.

How much luggage can I bring?

Luggage allowance is one large suitcase/bag in the hold, plus one piece of hand luggage in the coach. This luggage allowance is strict, and if you arrive with more than the above allowance we cannot guarantee your place on the coach and you may have to make your own way to Brighton.

Can my family members travel on the coach?

You are permitted to book additional family members onto the coach with you, provided they are your spouse (husband or wife), partner or dependant children, and are going to be resident in the UK with you. We cannot accommodate additional family members (such as parents).

What happens when I get to Brighton?

The journey from Heathrow airport to Brighton takes approximately 2 hours. The coach will make four stops - at King's Road and Abacus off-campus residence (both located in Brighton city centre) and then on campus, where most other university accommodation is based. Here, coaches will stop at a central campus location before finally dropping off any students who are living at Stanmer Court. Student helpers will be there to meet the coaches and direct you to your residence. We cannot stop at any additional locations, so students living in other accommodation will have to make their own way there from either King's Road residence or from campus. If you will be living in other accommodation, find out whether your house/flat is closer to King's Road, the London Road (where Abacus is located) or campus, so that you can get off at the correct place.

Special Needs/Wheelchair

If you have a disability where you require extra assistance when you travel, or use a wheelchair, please email with details. Alternative transport will be arranged for wheelchair users as unfortunately the above coaches are not wheelchair accessible.

To book on to the free coach service from London Heathrow Airport, please complete the form below. Completion of this form does not guarantee you a place on the coach - we will contact you by email to confirm this. You must have booked your flight before you can register for the free coach service.

We will take bookings up to 4pm on Thursday 14 September 2017 (depending on availability) and send email confirmation of your place. Please bring a copy of your email confirmation (printed or electronic) with you.
