Induction checklist
Here is a list of essential tasks to carry out when you recruit a new member of staff.
During their first term at the University, the new member of staff will be invited to attend a half-day ‘welcome session’ organised by Staff Development Unit.
On appointment
- Make an appointment for the new member of staff’s IT induction its-training@sussex.ac.uk
- Make an appointment for him/her to meet Head of School/ Division
- If there is a mentoring scheme appropriate to the new starter’s role, make arrangements for selection of a mentor. If not, it may be a good idea to arrange for another member of staff to ‘buddy’ the new person – taking responsibility for answering any practical questions, showing them around etc.
First day:
- Welcome the new member of staff to the School/Division
- Introduce them to their ‘ buddy’ or mentor
- Introduce them to Head of School/ Head of Division and colleagues
- Show them their place of work
- Arrange for any keys/ access necessary
- Give or arrange for a tour of the building
- Show them the location of toilets / tea, coffee, water facilities
- Show them fire exits / fire evacuation point and assembly point
- Make appropriate arrangements for any special needs
- Give a clear statement of your expectations re attendance – ie start/finish times
- Specify timings of lunch breaks
- Show them to their IT registration appointment

Week One

- Draw attention to University Services – eg The Library, Sussex Sport
- Go through a summary of aims of school/ division – and where the new employee’s job fits in
- Make arrangements for on-the-job training

- Give a list of useful contacts; show them how to find contact information
- How to book holidays
- How to report sick leave
