Research and knowledge exchange

Science and Technology Facilities Council Impact Acceleration Account

The objective of the STFC Impact Acceleration Account is to increase the impact of STFC-funded research outputs by strengthening user engagement and by supporting a variety of knowledge exchange and commercialisation activities at early stages for progressing research outputs and outcomes to the point when they would be supported by other funding.

Call for applications

Early stage proof of concept projects

This opportunity offers financial support of up to a maximum of £20,000. This enables the development of novel ideas arising from STFC research outcomes or techniques. This strand supports early-stage ideas in strengthening intellectual property.

Market assessment projects

This offers financial support, of up to £5,000, towards the assessment of commercial potential. This can include market research, identification and investigation of potential applications and exploration of routes to market for technologies developed by STFC researchers.

Kick-start pilot projects

This contributes to co-funding with companies wishing to evaluate STFC researchers’ skills and technologies in small pilot studies. The companies will be expected to meet all their own costs and normally will be required to part-fund the pilot project with the University contribution being limited to a maximum of £5,000. Projects that secure a contribution from industry will be favoured.

Eligibility: Funds cannot support the following:

  • Public engagement activities
  • Payment for patent costs
  • Training or other activities for undergraduates
  • Activities based on outputs of research funded solely by organisations other than STFC
