Connecting with business for impact: Industrial Strategy opportunities

This seminar was organised by the University of Sussex ESRC Impact Accleration Account and took place on Wednesday, 2 May 2018. It was chaired by Prof Paul Nightingale and open to all University of Sussex staff. There were three speakers offering practical guidance and further background on the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and the opportunities for researchers.

  • Dr Sally Beken, Innovate UK & Knowledge Transfer Network, emphasised how Innovate UK are there to help bring together people and ideas, and it is a free service. She discussed the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund opportunities, as well as the Open Competitions. Presentation here (1.87 MB).
  • Simon Sharpe, Industrial Strategy: Affordable Energy & Clean Growth, Department of Business, Enterprise & Industrial Strategy, discussed the purpose of the Industrial Strategy and what the Government is trying to encourage. Presentation here (1.04 MB).
  • Charlotte Dormer, Economic and Social Research Council, discussed the contributions of social science research to the Industrial Strategy. Presentation here. (980 KB).

The Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) will provide opportunities to apply for funding based on projects in which researchers have created productive partnerships with UK businesses in the identified ‘challenge’ areas. The fund is part of the government’s £4.7 billion increase in research and development over 4 years, particularly focusing on the following 4 Grand Challenges: Artificial Intelligence & the Data Economy; Clean Growth; Future of Mobility; and Healthy Ageing.
