Employing Casual Staff

If you need to employ someone on a short term basis then you can do so using casual employment.

Casual employment has no contract so there is less protection for both the employer and the employee, for example there is no required notice period, however it is also very flexible in that it is paid on an hourly basis.

If you choose this route, you do not need to advertise the position. You are free to appoint an appropriate person of your choice.

The University manages temporary staff engagements in partnership with Reed Talent Solutions. Further information about the process can be found on the University Finance Division website.

Once you have identified your casual staff requirements, you can register this with the service by logging into the Hiring Manager Portal using your university login details. Further information about using the Portal is available in the Portal User Guide or you can contact Reed directly for further assistance.

Before your casual employee starts you must also complete a Visitor Form and have it signed by the Head of School.

If you are unsure about whether temporary employment is appropriate for your staffing needs then you can contact the Psychology HR Business Partner who will be able help you identify the correct engagement process. Alternatively, our Deputy School Administrator Brigitte Groves may be able to help signpost you to the most appropriate service.
